Columbia’s MFA Thesis Show was supposed to have opened tonight. Of course there are much bigger problems and tragedies in the world (now and always). In the grand scheme of things this is a small loss but still a loss.
About a day before we learned we were going to have to leave our studios, I set this emergency/survivalist campfire up in a recessed outlet box at Columbia’s Lenfest Center. I was mocking up a thesis proposal in the space that we still hoped would house our upcoming exhibition. (How naive that hope seems now!) It feels even more poignant now in this time of isolation.
“Crisis“ comes from a Greek word meaning “decision.” Do we decide to fend for ourselves or lean into each other to get us through? In what ways can we lean in while keeping social distance?
This pandemic has revealed so much about our priorities over the past decades and the systems they built, atrophied, and destroyed. Perhaps the “decision” is a daily practice that we lost sight of long ago. A continual project always waiting for us to begin anew. #tikkunolam .
